About Hurstville
Located 17 kms from the centre of Sydney, Hurstville is bounded by Canterbury, Rockdale, the Georges River and Salt Pan Creek and is made up of residential, industrial and commercial areas.
The population of Hurstville was minimal until the 1840s when access was improved. In the early days land was used predominantly for farming. The population grew following the opening of the Illawarra railway line in 1884. Expansion continued during the early 1900′s, with extended growth in the 1930′s.
Development boomed during the post-war years, accompanied by commercial growth in the City Centre. Growth slowed in the mid ’80s, but the population has increased since the early 1990s.
Most of the recent growth has been in the suburb of Hurstville, particularly from high-rise developments.
